If you’re flicking through the pages of a fashion mag this season, prepare to come face-to-zip with a bomber jacket in every colour and pattern imaginable
As autumn sneaks up on us, it’s time to think jackets. And this year there is a clear winner: the bomber. Since the MA-1 flight jacket first appeared on the US military in the 1950s, this iconic style has continued to crop up at regular intervals on the catwalks and this time it’s back with a vengeance.
We’re kicking-off off with Monsoon’s Grey Saskia Embroidered Bomber Jacket. As the name suggests, it is decorated with embroidery and beads. It also features shimmering threads throughout the fabric, along with stretchy cuffs and hem. A good match is the SF Unisex Bomber Zip-Through Sweat (SF511) in 80% cotton/20% polyester brushed back fleece for a casual look (the heather grey style is 85% cotton/15% viscose), along with ribbed collar, cuffs and waistband.
Another bomber option is the brilliantly patterned Navy Palm Print Tailored Bomber Jacket from New Look – we recommend pairing this with the brand new B&C Collection Trooper /Men (JM963). This lightweight bomber jacket is made from 100% polyester 210T taffeta with a fashionable contrasted mesh lining, and has been tested for all print techniques and embroidery.
Also offering a highly decorated style is the Floral Spray Bomber Jacket from Bon Prix, which can be matched with another new style, the Rebel Unisex Fashion Bomber Jacket (01616) from Sol’s. Made from 92% polyester/8% polyamide, its features include a zip pocket on one sleeve and slanted front pockets with stud fastening.
The final bomber for Trendwatch this month is the covetable Burgundy Jacket from J by Jasper Conran at Debenhams, which of course can only have one imprint match: the new, too-cool-for-school Castlefield Bomber Jacket (TRA461) from Regatta Originals, which includes stretch ribbed collar, cuffs and hems.
There are some other jacket types begging for attention this season despite the bomber dominance. Decorated denim jackets are big news as the Levis Trucker jacket celebrates its 50th anniversary. Topman’s embroidered, black denim jacket is a more subtle version than most; decorators who are feeling inspired can opt for Result’s new Stonewash Denim Softshell (R406X) in black, which offers the aesthetic appeal of denim with the performance benefits of softshell.
