Earlier this year, Babybugz of Mantis World launched the new Baby Stripy Long Sleeve T (BZ38), a bold, striped T-shirt with cute elbow patches.

Mantis World Brand manager Kirsty Macdonald explains that customers are increasingly asking for baby garments that reflect current retail trends, hence the introduction of the BZ38. “We know from experience with our other striped styles that customers no longer look at a striped fabric with trepidation or a look of bewilderment with regards to how to decorate it. We also know that the inclusion of a stripe within a sea of plain garments can make a range suddenly look much more ‘now’. Customer research shows that gift-sets play a large role within the babywear sector and that a mix ’n’ match stripe/plain set looks rather lovely indeed.

“We also recognised a long time ago that babywear can be detailed despite being small in size, and it’s those details that make the important difference when seeking that vital ‘aaah’ factor we aim for.

“Three colours and stripes and elbow patches? There are few brands, even in adultswear, that would consider that, never mind getting it all to fit within a tiny garment. But it’s worth it. We love to see how customers are using the garments within their own ranges and to hear how excited they are at being able to get their hands on something that allows them to match and mirror the big retailers in terms of style and range appeal. It’s modern, it’s bold and directional, and we’ve been rather taken aback at how it’s been taken on.”

Ethical manufacture is something that’s becoming more important than ever across all sectors

The stripes work well with bold decorations. “The beauty of the interlock fabric means it’s sturdy enough to cope with more than merely print, with examples of appliqué designs on the garments having been seen,” explains Kirsty. “Although embroidery would be an option, we’ve found that it’s not the decoration of choice for babywear due to the potential irritation caused by the embroidery backing, and indeed the potentially solid nature of high density embroidery stitching.”

The BZ38 is available in two colourways – navy/washed white/red and bubble gum pink/ washed white/red – and features contrast elbows, which Kirsty says elevates the garment to ‘true retail-ready status’, along with an envelope neckline and tear-off label. It is also, like all Babybugz styles, Oeko-tex certified.

It’s not just the Oeko-tex certification that is important to babywear buyers, reports Kirsty. “Ethical manufacture is something that’s becoming more important than ever across all sectors, but is something that has a special affinity for many within the babywear sector. There’s something about babies that makes folk more aware of the planet and environment, about what’s right, and wanting to do the absolute best for the tiny ones. This style is made in a factory that operates a strict (and independently certified) ethical policy regarding worker care, hours, conditions and so on, and operates a water and effluent treatment plant to ensure that any water used during the dyeing process is cleansed prior to being released back into the environment. Quite simply, for Mantis World, ethical production is the right thing to do.”
