Print technology manufacturer Vastex has developed two new conveyor dryers that remove ethylene glycol emitted during the direct-to-film (DTF) curing process.

They feature a washable mist separator that removes glycol – a toxic synthetic fluid emitted by DTF adhesives – from contaminated vapour and collects its condensate in a removable receptacle.

Vastex has launched two models, both with 61cm-wide, variable-speed conveyor belts: EconoRed VP-III-24 with 10,800 watts, and EconoRed VP-VI-24 with 15,600 watts for higher belt speeds and capacity.

Engineered specifically for DTF curing in which adhesives emit glycol, the new dryers draw filtered make-up air through the top-centre of the heating chamber and through its double-wall top and sides, serving to cool the outer skin and chamber edges for operator safety.

Preheated make-up air flows into the heat chamber, replacing the exhausted air being drawn out along each side of the belt, while preventing an inrush of air from the infeed and exit of the dryer that would otherwise disturb lighter materials.

The volume of air entering the chamber is also adjustable, allowing the operator to fine-tune the air flow.

The washable mist separator removes the glycol from the vapour and collects the condensate.

An optional make-up air heater is available to decrease the chance of make-up air cooling the product.

Air is drawn through the dryer by an exhaust fan at the downstream end of the system to minimise exposure to heat and vapour contamination. A collar at the fan’s outlet allows connection of the user’s exhaust ductwork to the shop’s exterior.

Vastex president Mark Vasilantone said: “DTF printers must take caution that curing adhesive powders releases toxic vapours.

“These Vastex DTF-specific dryers employ advanced air mapping to reduce exposure to these fumes and collect glycol condensate, protecting the operating staff as well as the dryer’s heating elements.”

Vastex manufactures a wide range of conveyor dryers for direct-to-garment (DTG), DTF and screen printing applications as well as DTF powder applicators, screen printing presses, athletic numbering systems, flash cure units, screen exposing units, screen drying cabinets, screen prepress equipment and washout booths.
