Team GB has done us proud at the Olympics in Rio this year, winning 27 gold medals, 23 silvers and 17 bronzes. One thing that caught our eye, apart from the impressive performances, was the team kit for the Opening Ceremony. And, in particular, the embroidery on the jackets worn by both the women and the men.
Designed by Stella McCartney for Adidas, the opening ceremony outfits were inspired by the designer’s signature silhouettes, with the jackets featuring the newly commissioned coat of arms in classic embroidery on the back. The women had white, tailored jackets with a statement gold buckle, while the men wore a navy blue pea coat-inspired jacket with military-style detailing.
“The goal for Rio 2016 was to rewrite the rules of performance and design for athletes, allowing them to look and feel like champions on and off the field,” says Stella McCartney, creative director for the Adidas Team GB and Paralympics GB official kit. “The inspiration behind the design was this idea of contrasting British tradition with a modern attitude. The new coat of arms, specially commissioned for this project, and traditional Union Flag hues sit alongside bold textures and modern silhouettes to create a strong identity and make the athletes feel like a team.”
