BE Uniforms has been named family business of the year in awards run by Scottish Borders Chamber of Commerce.

It was among 11 organisations recognised in the Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards which cover the south-east Scottish region including Galashiels, Hawick, Peebles, Selkirk, Kelso and Jedburgh. The award ceremony was held in September at Peebles Hydro Hotel & Spa.

BE Uniforms, also known as Border Embroideries, was founded in 1989 by Billy and Shirley-Anne Smillie and since last year has been run by their sons, Ross and William Smillie. Their daughter, Aynsley, has also been involved in the business.

Based in Greenlaw in the Scottish Borders, it supplies schoolwear, teamwear and workwear, with shops across southern Scotland and the north of England, from Dundee to Carlisle and Newcastle upon Tyne.

Among the many other winners, Walkerburn-based sustainable merino wool clothing brand Findra Clothing won the awards for Micro Business of the Year and Innovation in Business while the title of Borders Business of the Year went to Hawick-based fashion clothing brand Raphael.
